Personalised Naturopathic Care – Looking at the Bigger Picture

If you've been living with ongoing symptoms, feeling like something isn't quite right, or you're simply not sure where to go next, naturopathy can provide an opportunity to step back and look at the bigger picture.

I'm Katrina Froome, a degree-qualified Naturopath, Herbalist and Nutritionist with over 12 years of clinical experience.

I work with clients in person from my Springfield Lakes clinic and online Australia-wide, providing personalised, evidence-informed naturopathic care.

My clinical work has a strong focus on gut health, IBS, SIBO, IMO, IBD and digestive concerns, alongside women's health and hormonal changes, stress and anxiety, exhaustion, thyroid and metabolic health, nervous system wellbeing and complex or ongoing health concerns.

But ultimately, I work with the person sitting in front of me, not just their diagnosis, symptoms or test results.

Your Health Is More Than One Symptom

One of the things I hear regularly from clients is:

"I just don't feel well."

Sometimes there is already a diagnosis. Sometimes blood tests have come back within range. Sometimes there are several seemingly unrelated symptoms occurring at the same time.

And sometimes you've simply reached the point where you'd like someone to sit down with you, listen to the whole story and help you work out what might be worth exploring next.

Your digestion can influence how you absorb nutrients. Stress can affect your gut, sleep and hormones. Hormonal changes can influence mood, energy and digestion. Nutrient status, inflammation, nervous system health, lifestyle and metabolic health can all overlap.

Rather than looking at each symptom in isolation, I look at how these different areas may be interacting for you.

What Does Working With Me Look Like?

Your first consultation is about getting to know you and understanding your health history.

We'll talk through your current concerns, symptoms, nutrition, digestion, sleep, stress, energy, lifestyle, medications, supplements and any previous pathology or testing.

There is no one-size-fits-all naturopathic protocol in my clinic.

Your treatment plan is developed around your individual health picture, priorities and what is realistic for your life.

Depending on your needs, your treatment may include:

  • Nutritional support and practical food changes

  • Herbal medicine

  • Targeted nutritional supplements

  • Digestive and microbiome support

  • Nervous system and stress support

  • Sleep and lifestyle strategies

  • Functional testing where appropriate

  • Review of existing pathology and health information

  • Recommendations to discuss further investigation with your GP or specialist where appropriate

Treatment may also be introduced gradually or in stages, particularly when health concerns are complex or you've been unwell for a long time.

You don't need to change everything at once.

Food Should Nourish You – Not Make You Afraid to Eat

Nutrition is an important part of naturopathic care, but I don't believe that good health needs to come from an increasingly long list of foods you're no longer allowed to eat.

Many people with digestive problems arrive in my clinic already avoiding multiple foods because they're worried about triggering symptoms.

There may be times when a therapeutic diet or temporary food modification is useful — particularly when working with SIBO, digestive symptoms or particular microbiome findings — but restriction should have a purpose.

Where possible, my goal is to help you build more variety, confidence and nourishment into your diet over time, rather than continually taking foods away.

Your nutrition plan also needs to work in the real world.

Family dinners, work, eating out, holidays, celebrations and simply enjoying your food are all part of life.

Functional Testing – Taking Some of the Guesswork Out

Functional testing is something I regularly use in clinical practice when it may provide useful additional information.

Many of my clients come to me because they've been experiencing ongoing symptoms and want greater clarity around why they don't feel well.

Depending on your individual health concerns, testing may include:

  • Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)

  • Microbiome testing

  • SIBO breath testing

  • FoodFit testing

  • Other appropriate functional testing

Testing can provide a useful baseline, identify areas that may need further support and sometimes uncover a missing piece of your health puzzle.

It can also help us develop a more targeted treatment approach rather than relying purely on symptoms and guesswork.

However, testing is always optional.

If I believe a particular test may be useful, I'll explain what we're looking for, why I'm recommending it, the cost involved and how the results may influence your treatment before you decide whether you'd like to proceed.

Supplements – More Isn't Always Better

You won't automatically leave your appointment with a huge list of supplements.

I prefer to prescribe according to what you actually need.

This may include nutritional supplements, herbal medicine or a combination of both, depending on your health concerns, medications, existing supplements and treatment goals.

For clients with complex health concerns, I may introduce supplements or herbs gradually so we can see how your body responds.

As treatment progresses, prescriptions are reviewed and adjusted rather than simply adding more and more products.

My aim is targeted support rather than supplement overload.

Gut Health, IBS, SIBO, IMO & IBD

Gut health has become a significant area of my clinical work.

I regularly work with clients experiencing concerns such as:

  • Chronic bloating and abdominal distension

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhoea or alternating bowel habits

  • IBS, SIBO, IMO

  • IBD

  • Reflux

  • Excessive gas

  • Food reactions or sensitivities

  • Histamine-related symptoms

  • Ongoing digestive discomfort

  • Changes in bowel function that haven't resolved

Digestive symptoms aren't always as simple as removing a particular food.

Depending on the individual, we may need to consider digestive function, motility, the microbiome, stress and nervous system health, nutrition, hormones, medications, nutrient status and other factors that may be contributing.

This is also an area where functional testing can sometimes be particularly helpful.

Women's Health & Hormonal Changes

Women's health has been an important part of my clinical practice for many years.

I work with women through different stages of life, including support for:

  • PMS and PMDD

  • Menstrual changes

  • Perimenopause

  • Menopause

  • Hormonal changes

  • Energy and fatigue

  • Sleep changes

  • Mood and stress

  • Digestive changes associated with hormonal transitions

  • Thyroid and metabolic health

Hormonal health doesn't exist separately from the rest of your body.

Digestion, stress, sleep, nutrient status, blood sugar regulation, thyroid health and the nervous system can all form part of the picture, which is why I take a broader approach rather than focusing only on hormones.

Stress, Anxiety, Exhaustion & Your Nervous System

You don't have to be in a state of complete burnout before your nervous system deserves some support.

Long-term stress can show up in many ways — poor sleep, digestive changes, fatigue, tension, feeling wired but tired, difficulty switching off, changes in appetite or simply feeling that your body isn't coping the way it used to.

Nervous system support is therefore often woven into my naturopathic treatment plans alongside nutrition, herbal medicine and lifestyle strategies.

For clients wanting a more hands-on complementary wellbeing treatment, I also offer Body Balance Kinesiology Treatments from my Springfield Lakes clinic.

These gentle sessions may incorporate muscle testing, meridian work, emotional or timeline-based techniques, Reiki and other supportive techniques according to your individual session.

Working Alongside Your Medical Care

Naturopathic care does not need to be either/or.

I am very comfortable working alongside your GP, specialist and other healthcare practitioners.

I will never ask you to stop prescribed medication, and where symptoms or results require further medical investigation, I will encourage you to discuss these with your treating practitioner.

If you're taking medications, this is also considered when I'm prescribing herbs or nutritional supplements.

I believe the best healthcare is often collaborative healthcare.

You Have a Say in Your Treatment

One of the most important parts of working together is that you remain involved in the decisions about your care.

I'll explain my recommendations and why I think they may be useful, but we also need to consider your budget, time, family commitments, preferences and what feels achievable.

If you're not ready for testing, we'll discuss other options.

If you're struggling with a particular part of your treatment plan, tell me.

If something isn't working for you, we reassess.

Your treatment plan should support your life — not take it over.
