Understanding the common links between Long COVID and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The prolonged fatigue, mental fog, and overall sense of unwellness seen in individuals with Long COVID share a remarkable resemblance to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Both conditions are characterised by persistent symptoms that defy conventional explanations and may linger for months, if not years. From a Naturopathic and Emotions and Metaphysical Kinesiology (EMK) perspective, it’s essential to look beyond symptom management to address the underlying issues affecting the body, mind, and spirit.

Similarities Between Long COVID and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

1. Persistent Fatigue and Lack of Energy

Both Long COVID and CFS are characterised by an overwhelming sense of fatigue that isn’t relieved by rest. This debilitating exhaustion can affect one's ability to perform even the simplest tasks, from daily responsibilities to socializing.

From a naturopathic view, this fatigue often stems from an overloaded immune system. Persistent inflammation, especially after a viral infection, can deplete energy reserves, leaving individuals feeling drained.

2. Brain Fog and Cognitive Challenges

Memory lapses, difficulty concentrating, and confusion – often known as "brain fog" – are common complaints for both Long COVID and CFS sufferers.

Naturopathic approaches emphasize supporting the nervous system and cognitive function with adaptogens, nervines, and brain-nourishing nutrients like omega-3s, B vitamins, and magnesium. Natural remedies that reduce inflammation can also help improve mental clarity.

In EMK, we often explore stored emotional patterns related to mental exhaustion or confusion. Brain fog can be the physical expression of feeling overwhelmed or mentally burdened by past experiences, especially if trauma or long-standing stress is involved.

3. Immune System Imbalance

A dysregulated immune response is central to both conditions. In Long COVID, this might manifest as a continuation of immune hyperactivity post-viral infection, while CFS often involves immune dysfunction that leaves the body vulnerable to infections or inflammatory reactions. Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) has been linked to CFS and in most cases, these people who are suffering from CFS have had EBV in the past (usually in their teenage years).

Naturopathically, immune support is fundamental. This includes using herbs like astragalus, echinacea, and medicinal mushrooms to regulate immune function. Additionally, dietary adjustments can lower systemic inflammation by avoiding common inflammatory triggers like processed foods and sugars.

Through EMK, we recognize that the immune system is closely linked with stored emotions and stress responses. Emotional stress and trauma can compromise immunity, leaving the body susceptible to illness and reducing its resilience.

4. Physical Pain and Discomfort

Muscle pain, joint aches, and even a general sense of malaise are frequently reported in Long COVID and CFS cases. These symptoms may signify an underlying inflammatory state that has yet to be resolved.

Naturopaths focus on anti-inflammatory strategies through diet, lifestyle changes, and supplements. Foods rich in antioxidants, like berries and leafy greens, help to combat inflammation naturally. Turmeric and ginger are also powerful natural anti-inflammatories that can reduce physical discomfort.

In EMK, physical pain is often a signal of suppressed emotions that need expression. Body balance treatments work to release these stored emotions, often leading to a noticeable reduction in physical pain as the underlying emotional stressors are addressed.

4. Gut Health and Microbiome Imbalances

Both Long COVID and CFS have been linked to imbalances in gut health and the microbiome. The gut is a cornerstone of immune health, and disruptions here can manifest as fatigue, brain fog, and immune dysregulation. Many individuals with Long COVID and CFS experience digestive discomfort or irregularities, which can further impact nutrient absorption and overall well-being.

From a naturopathic perspective, microbiome testing can be invaluable for uncovering imbalances in the gut, such as low diversity of beneficial bacteria or overgrowth of pathogenic microbes. With this information, a personalised gut health plan can be developed, including probiotics, prebiotics, and other gut-nourishing supplements, as well as dietary changes to rebalance the microbiome and support digestive health.

In EMK, gut health can also reflect emotional imbalances and stress responses. Body balance treatments can help address the emotional patterns linked to gut health issues, allowing for a release of stored stress that may be impacting the digestive system. EMK techniques can support both the physical and emotional aspects of gut healing, creating a holistic foundation for recovery.

5. Hormonal Disruption and Dysregulation

Both Long COVID and CFS can lead to hormonal imbalances, such as cortisol irregularities. This is often tied to stress and adrenal fatigue, which can exacerbate feelings of fatigue and affect overall well-being.

A naturopathic approach to hormonal balance often includes supporting adrenal health with adaptogens such as ashwagandha or rhodiola, as well as lifestyle interventions like proper sleep, stress reduction techniques, and regular, gentle exercise.

In EMK, hormonal imbalances are viewed as an expression of internalized stress. When the body is constantly on high alert, cortisol levels can become irregular. Releasing deeply rooted stress and trauma can significantly help in recalibrating the body's hormonal systems.

 A Holistic Roadmap for Recovery

In supporting clients with either Long COVID or CFS, the journey to healing is uniquely personal. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, but naturopathy and EMK together offer a pathway that addresses physical, mental, and emotional well-being holistically.

Naturopathic Recommendations:

  1. Diet: Focus on an anti-inflammatory diet rich in whole foods. Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and proteins. Avoid processed foods, refined sugars, and any known food sensitivities.
  2. Restorative Supplements: Include immune-supportive and adaptogenic herbs, anti-inflammatory nutrients like omega-3s and turmeric, and essential vitamins like B-complex, vitamin C, and magnesium.
  3. Microbiome Testing: Testing the gut microbiome can provide insights into bacterial imbalances that may be affecting energy, immunity, and overall health. With targeted support, it’s possible to cultivate a healthier, more diverse microbiome.
  4. Sleep Hygiene: Ensure regular and restful sleep to support the body’s healing. Herbs such as chamomile, valerian, or passionflower can help with relaxation and better-quality sleep.

EMK Techniques for Healing

  1. Body Balance Treatments: These sessions can help identify and release blocked emotions that may be contributing to physical symptoms. Through kinesiology, we explore emotional triggers or imbalances and realign the body’s energy.
  2. Stress-Release Protocols: EMK techniques can help reduce the emotional impact of stress, freeing the mind and body from long-standing worries, anxieties, and fears.
  3. Visualization and Affirmations: The mind’s power over the body is significant. Incorporating positive affirmations and visualization practices can reinforce healing beliefs and promote emotional resilience.

Conclusion

The journey to healing from Long COVID or CFS may be complex, but with a combination of naturopathic support and EMK, it’s possible to work toward restoring balance in the body. A personalised approach that respects each individual’s unique needs and experiences is key, allowing a path forward that encompasses both physical and emotional healing. In this holistic approach, the whole person can emerge stronger, healthier, and more resilient.
