Detoxing isn't a dirty word if you do it correctly.

How many detox drinks, supplements or diets have you tried over the years?

Here are some of the popular ones that have popped up over the past 30 years or so. Lemon Detox? Water fasting? Juice Cleanse? Grapefruit Diet? The Cabbage Soup Diet? The Liquid Diet? The Zone Diet? The Subway Diet? The Atkins Diet? The Master Cleanse - Lemonade Diet? The Liver Cleanse Diet? The Medical Medium? The Lollipop Diet?

How many of these do you remember or have tried?

I can remember trying the Lemon Detox, The Cabbage Soup Diet, The Liver Cleanse Diet and some of the Medical Medium recipes. I did want to try The Lollipop Diet way before I was a Naturopath but knew it was a gimmick so left that one alone!

Why do people detox?

Detoxification is the body's natural process of eliminating toxins and waste to keep you feeling your best. This is done by our lymphatic system (spleen, thymus, lymph nodes) along with our lungs, liver and kidneys.

What is our lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system is a part of the immune system that helps protect the body against diseases and infections. The lymphatic system is a network of delicate tubes throughout the body. It drains fluid (called lymph) that has leaked from the blood vessels into the tissues and empties it back into the bloodstream via the lymph nodes. Our liver cleanses the blood further to support elimination through our digestive system, including our small and large intestine along with our kidneys.

Signs your body needs a Detox

Sometimes, our bodies can use a little extra support to handle the challenges of modern living. This is the case when we are having many daily coffees or energy drinks to stay awake during the day, nightly alcoholic drinks to help calm down after a busy day at work, our afternoon sugar fixes, quick meals that are highly processed and not sleeping well each night.

  • Digestive issues - bloating, bad breath, body odour, weight gain, reflux, constipation or loose bowels.
  • Brain fog, poor memory.
  • Body aches and pains.
  • Lymphatic congestion - cellulite, reoccurring colds, sore throats, excess mucous.
  • Hormonal imbalances - heavy or light periods, PMS or PMD, sore breasts.
  • Skin - acne, eczema, dermatitis, rashes.
  • Feeling sluggish, exhausted, tired.
  • No energy or motivation.
  • Anxiety and low mood.
  • Dark circles under your eyes.
  • Headaches.
  • Food allergies and sensitivities
  • Not feeling hungry or eating because it's time to eat

As a Naturopath I often promote detoxification as a way to improve overall health and well-being. I like to do this in the warmer months as it works best for our bodies as we naturally feel lighter and enjoy lighter meals and we aren't contending with the cold months and needing to eat more comforting foods.

Social Media and Detox Marketing

When it comes to social media marketing and the appeal of detox programs, several factors contribute to people's interest in detoxing:

  1. Health and Wellness Trends: Detoxification aligns with the broader health and wellness trends that have gained popularity in recent years. Many people turn to social media for information on how to lead healthier lifestyles, and detox programs are presented as a way to kickstart a healthier routine.

  2. Weight Loss and Body Image: Detox programs are sometimes marketed as a quick fix for weight loss or achieving a slimmer, more desirable body shape. This promise of quick results can be particularly appealing to those who are dissatisfied with their current weight or body image.

  3. Promises of Increased Energy: Detox programs often claim to boost energy levels and vitality, which can attract individuals who feel fatigued or stressed. These claims can be enticing for people seeking more energy and improved overall well-being.

  4. Social Media Influencers and Celebrities: Many social media influencers and celebrities promote detox products or programs, which can significantly influence their followers. People may be more likely to try detoxes if they see their favorite influencers or role models endorsing them.

  5. Peer Pressure and Social Influence: People often see friends, family, or acquaintances sharing their detox experiences on social media. This can create a sense of peer pressure or social influence, encouraging others to try detox programs to fit in or be part of a trend.

  6. Belief in Toxin Accumulation: Detox programs are often based on the belief that the body accumulates toxins over time, and these toxins can lead to various health issues. This concept can be compelling, as it suggests that a detox program can help rid the body of harmful substances.

  7. Desire for a Fresh Start: Detoxes are sometimes marketed as a way to start anew, both physically and mentally. This idea of a "clean slate" can be appealing to those looking to make positive changes in their lives.

It's essential to approach detox programs with caution and skepticism. While some detox methods may have short-term benefits, they often lack scientific evidence and may not lead to long-term health improvements. Furthermore, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional, such as a Naturopath as we have been trained throughout our degree on how to support you safely before embarking on any detox program, as some detoxes can be harmful or unnecessary for many individuals. Social media influencers aren't qualified to promote safe detox's or give health advice. Which leads into my next heading ....

The Key to Safe Detoxing

  • Hydration: Stay hydrated with pure water, herbal teas, and infused water to help flush toxins.
  • Nutrient-Rich Diet: Focus on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.
  • Healthy gut microbiome: Its important to eat prebiotic foods and fermented foods when detoxing as it helps to build up the good bacteria and bugs to help keep your digestive tract healthy and functioning well.
  • Herbal Support: Incorporate detoxifying herbs like dandelion, milk thistle, and turmeric into your routine.
  • Sweat it Out: Exercise and saunas help eliminate toxins through perspiration.
  • Mindful Practices: Meditation and deep breathing reduce stress and support detox.

Gentle Detox Methods:

  1. Morning Lemon Water: Kickstart your day with warm water and lemon to aid digestion and liver health.
  2. Green Smoothies: Packed with nutrients, they're a delicious way to cleanse your body.
  3. Dry Skin Brushing: Boost circulation and stimulate lymphatic drainage for toxin removal. Dry skin brushing should be done in gentle upward movements.
  4. Magnesium Salt Baths: Relax and detoxify with mineral-rich baths that draw out impurities.

Beware of Extreme Detoxes: Avoid extreme diets or harsh cleanses that can do more harm than good.  I've worked with many clients who have come to me because they are reacting to everything because of some of the crazy detoxes that are available online. Your body thrives on balance, not deprivation!
